  1. What is the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA)?

  3. The Freedom of information Act (FOIA) was enacted in 1966, and it generally provides 
  4. that any person has a right of access to Federal agency records. This right of access 
  5. is enforceable in court except for those records that are protected from disclosure by 
  6. the nine exemptions to the FOIA 
  7.  
  8. What information is available under the FOIA?
  9.  
  10. FOIA provides access to agency records generated by that agency 
  11. (or releasable portions of those records) except those protected 
  12. from release by nine specific exemptions. 
  13. The following are the nine FOIA exemptions and the information
  14.  they cover:

  16. 1. Classified national defense and foreign relations information 
  17. 2. Internal agency personnel rules and practices 
  18. 3. Material prohibited from disclosure by another law(how convienent)
  19. 4. Trade secrets and other confidential business information 
  20. 5. Certain inter-agency, or intra-agency communications 
  21. 6. Personnel, medical, and other files involving personal privacy 
  22. 7. Certain records compiled for law enforcement purposes 
  23. 8. Matters relating to the supervision of financial institutions 
  24. 9. Geological information on oil wells.

  27. How long will it take to answer my request?
  28.  
  29. Federal agencies are required to answer your request for 
  30. information within 20-working days of receipt of your request 
  31. at the office responsible for the records (excluding Saturdays,
  32. Sundays, and holidays). For FOIA request received by e-mail,
  33. the "receipt" date is considered the date the e-mail message 
  34. is opened by the Bureau responsible for the information. 
  35. Sometimes an agency may need more than 20-working days to find
  36. the records, examine them, possibly consult with other persons
  37. or agencies, and decide whether it will disclose the records 
  38. requested. If so, the agency is required to inform you before 
  39. the deadline. Agencies have the right to extend this period up
  40. to 10 more working days.
